I think the strong trend towards personalization and privacy is now emerging. More and more people are turning their backs on Facebook and other social networks. Yes, they like big numbers because they need this numbers. If i collect 1000 contacts people can think, yea this guy is so popular, special and must be a very important person. If you wanna be a VIP in social network collect thousands of connections, say "yes" to any request. Social network connections should be focused on quality not quantity. Why?
