Why I love Chrome, but I use Firefox

chrome-ie-firefox1For some time now I’ve been really astonished by Chrome, the free browser by Google. I just love its performance, how tiny but useful Google made it. I think that we all like such applications. However, my Chrome love is in danger! My old browser-friend is still coming back to me – Firefox. Sometimes I can refuse to use Firefox and suddenly I notice that I have 50 pages opened in Chrome, 10 in Firefox but I can’t move them all to Chrome…Why I love Chrome, but stil use Firefox?

My love

There are several reasons why I really like Chrome. Some of them are just great. For instance great search possibilities. Firstly, when I type in my URL box I am searching in Google at the same moment.

Secondly, I am able to search in specific website in their internal links I’ve visited earlier.

Thirdly, when I search using [CTRL]+[F] I see my search results colored on right hand side which gives me a clear overview on whole page! I also really like the speed of Chrome browser. It is for sure 50% faster than Firefox and it is taking up less resources. Last but not least, I need to mention how tiny the user interface is compared to the browser window left for pages we will visit. This is just a great trade-off.

And here we are… Firefox. I wanted to stop using it because Chrome is just better but I can’t! Why?

What is really important to me is the fact that I have good spell check in my browser. I know that even this post can have some typos or incorrect tenses but I think that you are able to understand it. This is thanks to Firefox spell check which is working great in my Wordpress editor window.

Unfortunately, in Chrome spell check is much worse.

Other things I can’t use in Chrome and I have in Firefox are plugins. I use Delicious and StumbleUpon plugins which are not existing for Chrome. Of course, there are some smart workarounds for these issues (Delicious in Chrome, StumbleUpon in Chrome)  but I am a lazy guy and I want to have one button/shortcut key to do my things.

I am also a Web Developer. Recently, I was trying to check how my website is working in Chrome because I got a bug report from one of my clients. Unfortunately, the issue was not correctly interpreted javascript by the Chrome browser. When I tried to use the Debugging Tools available for developers I was very disappointed with the usability of these tool. Firebug is beating it from each side!

Last thing is the ActiveX support, which is needed for some banks’ websites. In Firefox after I installed the ActiveX plug-in I instantly knew that I am safe now and I can login. In Chrome I installed the plug-in, because I got a message box to do this. I am not sure if this really happened because I have this message box each time I visit the page.

Sad but true, it won’t be easy for Chrome to win

I must admit that Chrome is great but without a big set of plug-ins it cannot compete with Firefox. Currently it is mainly a solution for people who use Internet for browsing and nothing more. Unfortunately, for these people Microsoft has their Internet Explorer shipped together with Windows, while Chrome would give them a better browsing experience. This decreases the chance that Chrome will become very popular dramatically. Besides I am still forced to use Firefox. Like we wrote before Internet Explorer seems to have a stable market share.

I'm using Linux, so FF is still the best browser in my mind ;)

It's a pity because Chrome is really great. Why you don't use Opera? I heard from my colleagues that this it is better then Firefox?

I have a love/hate relationship with my FF plugins... I love that they are there. I hate that I have to wait for them to "update" every other time that I launch FireFox. I use Chrome almost exclusively now. It launches faster, and I have to wonder if part of that perf is because it's not open to *every plugin known to man* like FF.

Unfortunately plug-ins are occasionally updating while Firefox is started. In my opinion, this could be done in thread behind and plug-ins could be updated while Firefox is closing, not opening.
